Congress leader and president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee Rita Bahuguna Joshi on Friday described the rape of a six-year-old girl in Aligarh as condemnable and not saddening.
Lashing out at the Uttar Pradesh Government and the state police, she said, "Suspensions won't do, strict action must be taken against the police."
She was reacting to Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's order to suspend 21 officials late Thursday night. Among those suspended were four sub-divisional magistrates (SDMs), a divisional forest officer (DFO), a police circle officer and an inspector - for dereliction in performing their duties.
According to a statement from the government, police department officials who were put under suspension on the CM's direction included Arun Kumar Singh, Circle Officer (City), Aligarh, who was found prima facie guilty of not acting as per the rules. Head constable Soran Singh of Provincial Armed Constabulary and constable Anil Kumar of Aligarh police were also suspended for harassing and behaving in a disrespectful way towards women.
Coming hard at the politicians she said, " Such action and audacity cannot take place without the backing of the politicians, hence, I think the politicians have a lot of say in the working of the police."
A girl is raped in Aligarh and when the people go to the police station to file a complaint, the police inspector asked the complainant if they saw the rape taking place, is this human?" Joshi said.
It maybe recalled that an elderly woman was knocked down by a police officer with his baton during a lathicharge to quell protests on Thursday over the alleged rape and murder of the six-year-old girl in which seven persons were injured.
The minor girl went missing earlier this week and later her body was recovered from a garbage dump in Nagla Kalar area of Aligarh, police said.
The crime sparked off violent protests by locals, prompting the police to use force.
The victim's family alleged that she was strangled to death after being sexually abused.
