In an apparent reference to Gujarat chief minister and BJP's prime ministerial face Narendra Modi's aggressive campaigning, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday said he and all "sane persons should be worried about the politics of hate which is now sweeping" the country.

Asked about the threat to the life of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, who in an election speech in Rajasthan on Wednesday said there was a possibility he could be killed like his grandmother and father, Singh said the government would take all possible precautions to ensure that did not happen.

To another question on the slow start of campaigning by the Congress for the 2014 general elections, as compared to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he expressed confidence that his party would emerge victorious.

Asked if corruption charges and scams during the past nine years and price rise had hit the UPA government's credibility and resulted in Modi's rising popularity, the PM replied, "First of all, I would say the scams that you are referring to took place in UPA-I.

"After that we had a general election. The Congress party won in that election hands down and I am sure when the result of 2014 gets out, the country will once again be surprised."

On the possibility of granting statehood to Telangana before the 2014 polls, Singh said a Group of Ministers was looking into the matter.

"They are going into all aspects of the problem and I am sure they will come out with viable solution to this very difficult and complicated problem."
