The BJP on Wednesday will name its general secretary Amit Shah as the new party president. Shah, who won Uttar Pradesh for the saffron party in the Lok Sabha polls, will succeed Rajnath Singh, who is now the Union home minister.

The party, on Tuesday night, named South Delhi Municipal Corporation’s standing committee chairman Satish Upadhyay as the new chief for Delhi BJP. He replaces Dr Harsh Vardhan who is the new Union health minister.

“The parliamentary board, BJP’s highest decision-making body, will meet here on Wednesday to accept Singh’s resignation and name Shah as his successor,” a senior BJP leader told HT.

Fifty-year-old Shah, a close confidant of PM Narendra Modi, is expected to give a complete makeover to organisational structures, replacing at least three vice presidents and three general secretaries, who are now ministers in the Modi cabinet.

Presidents of BJP’s Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Tamil Nadu and Chhattisgarh units too have become ministers and new faces have to be brought in to lead the party in these states.
