Since time immemorial woman in India has always been praised as the goddess of Shakti. She has always been revered as the centre of motherhood and prosperity. Women's movement and a wide-spread network of government and non-government organisations (NGO) which have strong grass-roots presence and deep insight into women's concerns have contributed in inspiring initiatives for the empowerment of women.

Today women in India is making her mark in corporate offices, trying her hand in almost every field whether in stock market, exercising her surgical skills in the operation theatre or even heading a country! Each year around the world, International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8. Thousands of events occur not just on this day but throughout March to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. NGOs, governments, charitable trust, educational institutions, women's groups, corporations and the media celebrate the day. Many groups around the world choose different themes each year relevant to global and local gender issues.

The objective of celebrating this day is to show love and gratitude towards women. Initially the day was started as a socialist-political event. With time its association with political events has disappeared in many countries and people started celebrating IWD as an occasion or a festival. Austria, Germany, Denmark, and Switzerland are the first nations where the first IWD was celebrated on March 18, 1911. International Women's Day took prominence in the West after 1977 when the United Nations General Assembly declared March 8 as the UN Day for women's rights and world peace. Now about 100 countries celebrate the IWD.
