Unidentified assailants shot another BJP leader at Meerapur in district Muzaffarnagar on Tuesday morning. The incident comes close on the heels of the murder of party leader Vijay Pandit on Saturday.

Party’s state president Laxmikant Vajpayee told Hindustan Times that the deceased Omveer was co-convenor of the party’s panchayat cell in Meerapur
However, the police denied that the deceased had any association with the saffron party.

“We have no record either in police or in the local intelligence unit about his association with the BJP”, said Rakesh Jolly, SP (crime) Muzaffarnagar.

Jolly told HT on the phone that Omveer — a retired army man and a moneylender — was shot while on the way to his farm on the fringe of Nangla Khepad village in Meerapur.

However, the BJP spokesperson in up, Vijay Bahadur Pathak, confirmed that Omveer was a party leader and was actively involved in the panchayati raj cell.

“He was a member of the BJP. Even if we agree with their claims about the deceased was not a member of the BJP, does this absolve them of their responsibility to provide security to everyone in the state?” Pathak said.

The body of the deceased has been sent for postmortem. “We are collecting information about suspects. Teams have been formed to nab the perpetrators,” said the SP.
