A tunnel was detected in the Pallanwalla sector along the Line of Control (LoC) on Saturday. It was found in the area where a jawan had died on July 22 in an encounter with infiltrators who had sneaked in about 700 meters inside the Indian territory, according to sources.

“Army personnel deployed in Pallanwala sector found a tunnel approximately 50 metres inside the Indian side of the LoC during routine patrolling, troops are carrying out search in the area,” a defence spokesperson said.

The tunnel is about two-and-half feet wide and about three-and-half feet high, leading towards Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK). The spokesperson added that it appeared to be an incomplete tunnel as no exit point was found on the Indian side.

According to sources, the tunnel was detected on Friday night when the land caved in because of heavy rains in the area. The area has been cordoned off by the army after top officials visited the site.

Meanwhile, some reports suggested the tunnel could have been used by a group of about seven terrorists for movement in and out of the Indian territory. However, there has been no army confirmation of it.

A 300-meter tunnel was detected in Samba district in June 2012. In that instance too, the tunnel was detected when the land caved in and no exit point was found then either.
