The chief judicial magistrate of Srinagar on Saturday issued an arrest warrant against Shabir Khan, who resigned as Jammu and Kashmir minister of state for health after being booked on charges of molesting a woman doctor in his office cabin.

Khan, who is a Congress MLA from Jammu region, was asked by his party to step down on Friday. This was a day after the police booked him for attempted molestation and making obscene advances to a doctor who is a block medical officer and the wife of a senior separatist leader.

Meanwhile, doctors demonstrated in Srinagar on Saturday and demanded the arrest of Khan.  The doctors suspended routine duties in all the hospitals of Srinagar city.

Kashmir doctors association president Nissar-ul-Hassan said unless the accused is arrested and given exemplary punishment, the protests would continue.

"We are running emergencies and casualty services inside the hospitals. If the accused is not arrested today (Saturday), we will suspend all work in the hospitals across the Valley, including emergencies and casualty services," the protesters said.

In her complaint, the doctor alleged the minister had called her to his office chamber in civil secretariat at Srinagar as he wanted to know some details about the announcements made by Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad during his visit to Kashmir.

She alleged she was made to wait inside a cubicle, where the minister passed objectionable remarks and made advances.

She allegedly was even asked to come to the minister's Srinagar residence and serve kehwa, a local drink.
