Kejriwal was shaking hands with the people and exchanging pleasantries when he was attacked and his spectacles fell on the ground.
Almost immediately AAP supporters pounced on the man who was identified as Krishan Kumar from Legha village and thrashed.
Kejriwal, however, appealed to his supporters not to take the law into their hands and said that the purpose of AAP was to establish truth through peaceful means, not violence.
Later, Kejriwal tweeted: “Someone hit me hard on my neck just now. This kind of violent reaction is expected from them. It only shows their true character and desperation.”
The man who was in his twenties was eventually handed over to the police.
When asked, the attacker said he was an Anna Hazare supporter and was angry with Kejriwal for "hijacking" the movement. He claimed that he rose to protest but did not slap the AAP leader.
Kejriwal, who is on a three-day tour of Haryana and Punjab is scheduled to visit Ambala and Yammunanagar on Saturday and Chandigarh on Sunday.
