No more solitary confinement for rape accused Asaram. On Tuesday morning, the authorities of Jodhpur Central jail shifted four undertrials to his ‘VIP’ cell.

Though the reaction of the self-styled godman was not immediately known, the authorities had felt it was not a good idea to leave him in solitude for the next two weeks, an official indicated.

Asaram had made himself at home – sprinkling Ganga jal around the cell moments after he reached on Monday. He also demanded home-made food, medication, some articles for puja, and fresh clothes. “We are treating him like an ordinary inmate,” said jail superintendent Rakesh Mohan Sharma.

“Asaram has had a fixed routine for a long time. This routine should be allowed to him in jail,” his counsel Manendra Singh pleaded in a local court, which is hearing an application for his bail.

Remanded in 14 days’ judicial custody, Asaram has been lodged in a cell where former cabinet minister of Rajasthan Mahipal Maderna stayed in connection with the Bhanwari Devi abduction and murder case.

During questioning, while Asaram denied rape charges, he admitted that he met the girl and said there was nothing wrong if a grandfather spends some time with his granddaughter.
