Accused in a rape case, self-styled godman Asaram will stay in jail for another fortnight. On Monday, as his judicial custody was extended, the father of his 15-year-old victim alleged that he was being issued death threats by Asaram’s followers.

This was not the first time the girl’s parents have complained about the issue. Asaram’s followers, they say, want them to withdraw the case. “My client mailed me an audio clip which makes it clear that Asaram’s followers are threatening the family and intimidating witnesses,” said Manish Vyas, counsel for the girl’s father.

On Monday, no lawyer of Asaram was present in the district court when he was produced before the judge.

“Asaram remained in the court room for around 10 minutes and was looking calm. He told the judge he was suffering from severe headaches. An application in this regard is pending before the court,” said a lawyer.

Later, Asaram was sent back to the Jodhpur central jail where he has been staying since September 2.

Asaram’s close aide Shiva, who was also arrested for abating the crime, will also be in jail for the next fortnight.
