A medical board set up by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is probing the alleged rape and murder of two teenage girls in Badaun, recommended on Thursday fresh autopsies by exhuming the victims' bodies.

On Friday, the CBI may seek permission from the appropriate court or authority to exhume the bodies for autopsies on Sunday.

The CBI probe has detected alleged anomalies in the way the post-mortems were conducted by a team of Uttar Pradesh doctors.

"The medical board has recommended that there is a need to exhume the bodies of the alleged rape victims for further investigation," said a CBI spokesperson.

"Subject to the approval of the appropriate authority or court, the tentative date scheduled for the exhumation is Sunday," the official said.

“It is not required to take the victims’ parents’ permission for exhumation and the autopsies as per law. The permission of the concerned authority or court is required that we will take.”

The girls were buried as per the local customs since they were minors and unmarried.

The medical board to conduct the fresh autopsy comprises three doctors working with Delhi-based government hospitals who met on Thursday for the first time.

The CBI has, meanwhile, sent two personal particulars — a phone set and a pair of slippers — belonging to one of the deceased for forensic examination.
