The US has issued an advisory to its citizens travelling to or residing in India to “be mindful of their personal security in light of recent events”, an apparent reference to India’s protests against the arrest of Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade.

The US mission to India also reminded citizens of its “standing travel guidance,” and reminded them that demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn violent.

India has reacted sharply to Khobragade’s arrest on charges of underpaying her maid and subsequent strip-search. Barricades have been removed outside the US embassy in New Delhi and all US consulate personnel and their families have been asked to turn in their identity cards immediately. The US, however, has refused to withdraw the criminal charges, resulting in a diplomatic stand-off between the two countries.

“The US mission to India reiterates that demonstrations take place in India in response to world events or local developments. Please avoid areas where demonstrations are occurring and exercise caution if within the vicinity of large gatherings. Please stay current with media coverage of local events, be aware of your surroundings, and practice personal security awareness at all times,” the advisory on the embassy website said.
