A land dispute between two families is most likely the reason behind the murder and alleged rape of the seven-year-old in Midnapore district of West Bengal, police sources said.

Ratan Das, a ‘tantrik’, allegedly wanted a portion of land that belonged to the victim’s family. Primary investigation has revealed that this could have something to do with the crime.

Das, the main accused, was beaten to death by enraged villagers. His two aides, identified as Bhim Singh and Raju Singh, were also beaten up and are in the hospital.

“The two aides are receiving treatment. We are probing the matter and can give you the details once the investigation is complete,” Sukesh Kumar Jain, superintendent of police, East Midnapore told HT on Friday.

The victim’s family said she had gone out to get some food after returning from school on Wednesday evening. When she failed to come back home, her father alerted neighbours and a search began. Her family also filed a missing persons complaint. Her body was found hanging from a tree on Thursday morning. Locals said they had seen her talking to Das. They interrogated him and when they found his answers ‘unsatisfactory’, they beat him to death.
