A man in Odisha's Jagatsinghpur district married his girlfriend, who was gang-raped a few days back, proving that the tragedy hadn't changed his love for her.
Earlier, the families of Narayan Swain, 26, and his 22-year-old girlfriend were not in favour of the marriage. But, the incident had a change of parents' heart and the marriage was solemnised at a temple about 150km east of Bhubaneswar on Friday.
It was attended by the duo's parents and a few relatives.
Praising Swain, Jagatsinghpur superintendent of police Satyabrata Bhoi said, "His commitment to the girl is commendable. His action will also provide moral and psychological strength to the girl in fighting the social evil."
Bhoi said the alleged rapists were still at large. A search operation was on to arrest them.
On July 3, the two ran away from home after their parents expressed their opposition to the marriage. They wanted to have a registered marriage in Cuttack. The duo reached the railway station in the evening to go to Cuttack but failed to catch the train.
As there was no other train and they could not have returned home, Swain turned to a friend for help requesting him to find some place to stay the night.
The friend arranged a thatched house for them for Rs. 500. But in the night, he returned with another man, beat up Swain and raped his lover.
The girl lodged a complaint with the police the next day with Swain. The incident made both the parents agree to their marriage.
