At least twenty-five agitators were sustained burn injuries when a couple of 'mashals' in a “mashal morcha” (torch rally), which took out in protest against the alleged rape and murder of three school children at Murmadi in Bhandara district, fell on the bodies of some agitators accidentally at Bhandara on Sunday evening.
According to reports reaching Nagpur late on Thursday, the incident occurred when the marchers approached the busy Gandhi square where the morcha culminated into a public meeting at around 8.00 pm.
The BJP legislator, Nana Padole was addressing the gathering when a couple of 'mashals' fell down on the bodies of some agitators that engulfed the area. At least 25 persons sustained burn injuries in the accident.
Padole informed that all were immediately rushed to government-run civil hospital where three of them reported to be very serious.
The march was jointly organized by BJP, Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena in protest against the failure of the district police to nab the culprits even after 10 days of the brutal incident.
Meanwhile, a complete bandh was observed on Sunday at Lakhni in protest against the incident. The bandh was total, reports said.
On the other hand, the district police claimed that they have made headway in the investigation and hope to arrest the culprits soon. Six people have been brought in for questioning by a police team that went to Gujarat after the crime. A team was also sent to Rajasthan.
“We are hopeful to solve the case very soon,” said Arati Singh, the superintendent of police (SP), Bhandara. However, she refused to divulge the details.
The Maharashtra minister for employment guarantee, Nitin Raut visited Murmadi village on Sunday and met the mother of the victims, Madhuri Jaipal Borkar. He also held a meeting with senior police officials and reviewed the investigation.
