Amid growing indication regarding a larger role for Priyanka Gandhi in the Congress' affairs, the party's Madhya Pradesh leaders have requested Sonia Gandhi's daughter to actively participate in the outfit's affairs.

A hoarding put up at the Board Office Square in Bhopal read: "To strengthen Rahul Gandhi's hand, on the request of lakhs of party workers, Priyanka Gandhi should become active in the party."

The Congress' state spokesperson, KK Mishra, seemed to agree with the sentiments of the party workers who put up the hoarding. "After Sonia Gandjhi and Rahul Gandhi, if Priyanka, in whom party sees an image of her grandmother Indira Gandhi, decides to formally join the party, it would only energise the party cadres to carry forth the fight against the BJP with greater vigour," he said.

A central spokesperson of the Congress, meanwhile, said the party wanted all three members of the Gandhi family to take leadership roles. There has been media speculation about Priyanka Gandhi likely taking up a formal responsibility in the party as general secretary of the crucial state Uttar Pradesh.

"Everybody from all over India wants that all members of Gandhi family should come in politics," party spokesperson Shobha Oza said. Senior Congress leader and a Gandhi family loyalist, Oscar Fernandes, said on Thursday Priyanka Gandhi should have a more active role in the Congress and that she should take up an "important responsibility".
