Bhopal crime branch formally arrested gangster Mukhtar Malik and one of his accomplices on Friday. The duo was detained on Wednesday night from  MANIT Square by the crime branch and Habibganj police.

This is the first case registered by the city crime branch police station which was inaugurated on August 25. Police claimed to have recovered two pistols, 24 live cartridges and a knife from the duo.

Another notorious criminal arrested with Malik has been identified as Ravi Inve, a resident of Raisen. Both were booked under the Arms Act. Later, they were produced before the court and remanded to police custody for seven days.

Additional superintendent of police (ASP), crime branch Shailendra Singh Chauhan said police had received information about the presence of Malik in the city. "Several possible hideouts of Malik were raided. Finally, we got information that he was wandering near MANIT Square in his white SUV. We nabbed him there," Chauhan said.

Malik is wanted in a firing incident at Narmada Hospital since May. He along with his accomplice had gone to the hospital to meet an acquaintance who was admitted there. Malik and his acquaintance got into an argument with the security guard at the hospital. They created ruckus and allegedly fired gunshots in the air.

Malik has a strong criminal record with over 70 cases, including murder, attempt to murder, loots etc. registered against him at various police stations across Madhya Pradesh.

"During interrogation, it was found that Malik was involved in illegal arms smuggling in the state capital and nearby cities. He is being quizzed to ascertain his role in arms smuggling," revealed sources in crime branch.
