A law officer posted at Central Jail, Bhopal, was arrested by Gandhi Nagar Police for duping three youths of Rs. 5.5 lakh on the pretext of getting them jobs as jail guards.

The accused Mrigendra Pratap Singh was produced before the court on Sunday and remanded to police custody for three days.

The victims, Mohanlal Keer, Mahesh Keer and Shivraj Keer, all residents of Nasrullahganj, lodged a complaint with the police on Friday evening. In his complaint, Mohanlal said he met Singh in 2012, whereupon he promised that he would help him clear the recruitment exam for the posts of guards in the jail department.

Singh had allegedly demanded Rs. 2 lakh from each candidate for the exam conducted by the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB). The victims said they had paid Rs. 5.5 lakh and had promised to pay the remaining Rs. 50,000 after the exams. But when none of them cleared the exam, they approached Singh and asked him to return the money, but he refused and even dared them to go to police.

Superintendent of police, North, Arvind Saxena said, "As per information, he has duped many people. He is being quizzed and we are trying to find out how many people have been duped by him."
