In the midst of a row that he has frequently met individuals facing Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe at his residence, the agency’s director spoke to HT on Thursday. Excerpts:

You said there is nothing wrong if you meet somebody since you did not extend any favour. Do you think you are being targeted?
I can meet anybody but I have not done anything wrong as a result thereof. So where is the criminality? I am being targeted; there is a deep-seated conspiracy against me. Lawyer Prashant Bhushan is just a tool of these elements. Under me, the CBI has done many important probes including the Ishrat Jahan case and the Tulsi Prajapati case. I have been unbending, uncompromising in the probes. I don’t know which probe exactly it is, but as a result of such a probe, some groups are trying to destroy my reputation.

Why were you meeting so many individuals at your residence?
My residence is my camp office too. I am the CBI chief and we have been probing high-profile cases for which we need information. I meet people to seek information for our probes and also things about my own organisation. When I get information from these visitors, I ask my officers to look into it. In the police circles there is a time-tested maxim: set a thief to catch a thief. This is what I do.

Who do you think are these people out to ‘take revenge’?
The ones trying to take revenge are probably the ones whose entry into the CBI headquarters I had barred.

Do you think they monitored your wife and other family members?
Somebody was monitoring who came to my residence. We don’t know whose visitors’ diary it could be. They were not being maintained by the security details that are with me. They were intruding into my family’s privacy.

Will you request the SC to order an enquiry to find the authenticity of the visitors’ diary?
We have been advised by lawyers to file a perjury case for certain deliberate false statements made.
