A 10-year-old gang rape victim died in a hospital in the north-eastern Bihar district headquarters town of Katihar, late Thursday. Within hours of her death, a six-year-old rape victim was admitted in a critical condition to the Katihar sadar hospital, just a few kilometers away.

The first victim, who died during treatment at the Katihar medical college hospital (KMCH), was a resident of Bajraha village under Dhamdaha police station of Purnia district, adjacent to Katihar.

She had been sexually assaulted on April 27 by three persons in a maize field at Bareta village under Falka police station of Katihar, located just half a kilometer away from her home.

The victim’s father, a poor farm labourer, told the police Latra Yadav, Alok Yadav and Nirmal Yadav, all resident at Bareta, first raped her and then tried to strangle her to death.

Similar to the case of the five-year-old east Delhi rape victim, the assailants left her in the field, thinking she had died.

Later, the girl was found by some villagers, unconscious but still alive.

She was rushed to the KMCH where she died after five days. As KMCH falls under muffassil police station of Katihar, it was here that a case was lodged first.

“But we have forwarded the case to Falka police station for further action as Bareta, where the gang rape allegedly took place, falls under its jurisdiction”, mufassil PS SHO King Kundan told HT on Friday.

The victim’s father said the rapists were still at large. “We have nowhere to go for justice as the culprits are big people who can never do any wrong in the eyes of the law”, he complained.

Falka SHO Sanjay Das confirmed it was a case of gangrape. “The culprits are absconding. Raids are on to arrest them”, he said.

The other victim, battling for her life at the Katihar sadar hospital, was allegedly raped by a 35-year-old man while she was playing near her house at Kasba Toli under Kachna police station of Katihar.

“After assaulting her, the man, a grocery salesman, has fled to his native West Bengal border, leaving the victim in an unconscious state”, Kachna police station SHO Vishal Kumar told HT on Friday.

Efforts were on to arrest the assailant, he added.

The correspondent tried to contact Imam Asgar Ali, the superintendent of police, Katihar but he was unavailale.
