The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is hobnobbing with the Maoists and is trying to bring back a reign of terror in Jangalmahal area of West Bengal, chief minister Mamata Banerjee alleged on Friday.

She also did not rule joining hands with the CPI(M) to stop the BJP in the state where the saffron party won two of the 42 seats in the April-May Lok Sabha elections and is beileved to have made its presence felt.

“Recently BJP supporters equipped with firearms have held a road rally in West Midnapore. They are also hobnobbing with the Maoists and trying to trigger violence in Janglamahal areas once again,” Mamata said in a television interview.

“We have pictures too. There are specific intelligence inputs from the state home department. They (read BJP) are also trying to create problem in the hills,” she added.

BJP president Rahul Sinha, however, hit back at her, saying, “If the chief minister has any such pictures, she should bring it to the public platform. Trinamool Congress is actually afraid of us, and that’s why she wants to label us as Maoist sympathisers."

Since end 2011, peace returned to Jangalmahal that consists of large swathes of the districts of West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia following the elimination of CPI(Maoist) leader Kishenji. The rebels quickly suffered many reverses and the party was wiped out from the region.

Friday was the first occasion when the chief minister made fresh allegations against BJP trying to set up links with the Maoists — who tread opposite political poles — in Bengal.

Trinamool Congress is open to dialogue with CPI(M) to keep BJP at bay, said Banerjee striking a completely new political equation in a state where the political canvas was defined by years of opposition between her party and the Left led by CPI(M).

“None is an untouchable in a democracy,” said Mamata.
