Congress president Sonia Gandhi tore into the BJP on Thursday, accusing it of running corrupt state governments while "just pretending" to fight graft.

"We all know corruption is a disease, a cancer. No other party has done what Congress and UPA have done to fight corruption," she said at a public meeting in Mangalore.

Gandhi said it was the Congress-led UPA, and not the BJP-led NDA, which had brought in the RTI Act because of which "these scandals are coming out".

She said Congress had honestly tried to bring the lokpal bill, but BJP stalled it in Rajya Sabha. "Is BJP just pretending to fight corruption?" she asked, while accusing it of spreading false propaganda against the UPA.

She slammed the BJP's silence over corruption allegations in Karnataka, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and other states where it was in power.

Gandhi said corruption and failure marked BJP's governance in Karnataka and people would give a "right answer" to it. "In the assembly elections next year, the people of Karnataka will bring Congress to power again."

She said the UPA government had sanctioned Rs. 80,000 crore to Karnataka in the last five years, but the NDA offered only Rs. 30,000 crore to the state when it was in power at the Centre. "I ask where Rs. 80,000 crore went and whether it reached the common man."

She urged state Congress leaders and workers to bury differences. "Whenever Congress has fought unitedly, it has swept elections in the country."

Gandhi later inaugurated the centenary celebrations of Gokarnanatheshwara Temple and Narayana Guru Temple and participated in the Dasara festival.
