The BJP on Friday asked the Central government to explain why it refused Border Road Organisation (BRO) the funds required for maintenance of roads for the last four years despite warnings about “pathetic condition” of roads and the possibility of their being washed away if floods hit Uttarakhand.

BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said the BRO asked for funds for Project Shivalik for maintenance of the roads in the Garhwal region on a priority basis.

“While the BRO asked for Rs. 700 crore in 2010-11, it got only Rs. 50 core. In 2011-12, it asked for Rs. 400 crore but got only Rs. 100 crore. In 2012-13, the government granted only Rs. 25 crore though the demand was of Rs. 200 crore. This callous approach of the central government is deplorable,” he said.

Javadekar said while the nation saluted the efforts of the armed forces for the evacuation operation, the state government failed to warn and stop the pilgrims from advancing for the Char Dham yatra despite specific meteorological forecasts available on June 10.

“The specific warnings of heavy rain should have prompted the state government to take preventive action and many lives would have been saved.”
