Pramod Avadhvasi was killed in the early hours of Thursday. "The assailants threw his body on the highway to make it look like an accident," said a police officer. "Haka Koli, a notorious bootlegger, is the main suspect."

On Monday, a truck carrying liquor tried to run over a policeman in south Gujarat, when he tried to intercept the vehicle.

"We have asked the police to tighten monitoring at interstate borders," said SK Nanda, additional chief secretary (home).
