A school bus crushed to death a Class 1 girl on Monday, triggering protests in Faridabad’s Neighbourhood 5 with an agitating mob torching the vehicle and blocking the road in protest.

Anushika Kumar, the seven-year-old student of KL Mehta Dayanand Public School, was on her brother's bicycle. They were on the way to attend tuition classes.

Around 3.30pm, when they reached the Government Girls’ School, the bus, which ferries students of St Thomas Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, hit the bicycle from behind. Sahil was flung aside but his sister fell on the road and came under the wheels of the vehicle.

She was rushed to the hospital where she proclaimed dead on arrival.

Police struggled to contain the violence that followed the girl’s death. The agitators pelted the bus with stones and set it on fire. The fire department was called in to douse the fire.

The agitators also caught hold of the driver, Vinod Kumar, and beat him up. Policemen took him under their custody and in the evening booked him under provisions of the Indian Penal Code.

The family members and the protesters staged a sit-in at the busy BK Chowk, sparking a series of traffic snarls. “The agitators are demanding that the accused driver be handed over to them,” the police said.
