The Union cabinet on Wednesday cleared Phase-I of the Rs 11,420 crore Pune metro rail project. The 31 kilometre link will have two corridors --- Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation to Swargate and Vanaz to Ramwadi.
The proposed alignments will provide much needed respite to commuters forced to travel through some of the densest and heavily congested parts in the Pune Metropolitan Area. “The city with a population of 5.2 million has inadequate public transport system. The metro will considerably reduce the traffic congestion and will bring in fast, comfortable, safe, pollution-free and affordable mass transportation system,” said a senior Union urban development (UD) ministry official.
The metro project will be implemented by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited, a jointly owned company of Centre and the Maharashtra government.
