A high speed ambulance trailing Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma as part of his official convoy hit a pedestrian killing him in Ri-Bhoi district recently, officials said on Saturday.
The Guwahati-bound convoy of the chief minister had left Shillong at around 6pm on April 20 and on reaching Sumer, the ambulance hit one Wanbok Syiem who was taken to the Shillong Civil Hospital in critical condition, Ri-Bhoi district SP CVS Reddy said.
The victim died the following morning after which the driver of the vehicle, Wanbok Syiem (the victim and the accused share the same name) was arrested based on an FIR lodged by the victim’s sister, he said.
The matter came to light only after the family members of the victim came and met the media in the city on Saturday to highlight the plight of the victim’s sister and his wife.
Narrating the incident, E Syiem, the victim’s sister said the ambulance that came at a very high speed hit the man on the roadside while he was helping his aunt shift furniture.
After hitting the victim, the driver and a senior government doctor present in the ambulance took the victim on the same vehicle to Shillong Civil Hospital where he died the following morning, the family members said.
While there was no announcement of ex-gratia payment for the deceased till the filing of this report, the chief minister could not be contacted for comments.
