Fearing their parents' wrath, a boy of the Jat community and his girlfriend of the Scheduled Caste committed suicide by jumping in front of a train here on Tuesday night.
The 22-year-old boy, identified as Anil, was pursuing BTech from an engineering college in Ludhiana, Punjab, while the 17-year-old girl, identified as Pooja, had appeared in matriculation examination recently. Both belonged to Neoli Khurd village of the district and were missing since Tuesday night.
The incident came to light on Wednesday around 5.30am when a freight train driver spotted bodies of the couple on a rail track in the village.
The deceased boy had come to village a couple of days back.
"It appears that the two were in a relationship, but their parents were clueless about it. It is immediately not known what had prompted them to take the extreme step. Being an inter-caste couple, it seems that they did not want to embarrass their parents," Ranvir Singh, station house officer (SHO), Government Railway Police, Hisar, told Hindustan Times.
Police did not register any case into the incident till filing of the report as both the parties reportedly did not wish to pursue the matter further.
A police official said Anil had gone to wheat farms with a tractor trolley around 10pm on Tuesday and at midnight villagers had recovered the tractor trolley from the farm, but Anil was missing. His mobile phone was also switched off, the official said.
Meanwhile, the girl's parents also realised that their daughter was missing, the official said, adding that though villagers looked for them at night, they only came to know about the couple's death from police on Wednesday morning.
After conducting the post-mortem, report of which was awaited, at the Hisar Civil Hospital, bodies were handed over to the couple's relatives.
