The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday chased down a senior government official in a high-speed car drama in Chennai and seized Rs. 10 lakh he had allegedly taken as bribe.

The CBI acted on a tip that registrar of companies M Manu Neethi Cholan had taken the money from Chettinad Group of Companies chairman MAM Ramaswamy in return of a promise that he would not approve decisions taken at the company’s annual general meeting scheduled on Wednesday.

A rival management group was trying to get Ramaswamy sacked and the decision was to be taken in Wednesday’s board meeting. Ramaswamy’s adopted son and the company’s managing director, MAM R Muthiah, is said to be the prime mover of the plan to take control of the company.

The CBI tracked Cholan’s car and carried out raids at his office and residence, where it found another Rs. 20 lakh.

The investigating agency has also booked Ramaswamy, who has been admitted to a local hospital complaining of uneasiness.
