Kunda legislator Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya, who was under CBI scanner regarding the murder of police officer Zia-ul-Haque, has got a clean chit from the agency since no evidence has been found against him.

The clearance would come as a relief for Singh, who is an accused in two other cases and had to resign from the Akhilesh Yadav cabinet after he was named in this one.

“She (Haque’s wife Parveen Azad) was shaken after the murder of her husband and she walked into a trap set by my political rivals,” Singh later said.

Azad had accused Singh of having a hand in her husband’s murder, which took place on March 2, 2013, at village Ballipur. The alleged motive was that Haque had been probing irregularities involving Singh, then the food and civil supplies minister.

She had also alleged that four men close to Singh were the killers of her husband, who had been shot dead while trying to control a violence following the murder of gram pradhan Nanhey Yadav and his brother Suresh.

But though the first information report (FIR) named Singh, he was not named in the chargesheet. A narco-analysis test carried out on him in Delhi, too, failed to have an outcome.

The CBI’s closure report, filed on Thursday, told a special court that no evidence was found against Singh and the four other accused - Gulshan Azad, Hariom Srivastav, Rohit Singh and Guddu Singh. The case will come up for hearing on August 7.
