Video footage from hotels and pubs show the son of a Rajasthan MLA going on a drinking binge before driving a BMW car into an autorickshaw and killing three people in Jaipur last week, police said on Friday.
The evidence potentially nails claims made by Siddharth Maharia, 24, and his father, independent MLA Nandkishore Maharia that the youngster was not behind the wheel of the luxury vehicle when the accident took place.
HT could not independently verify the authenticity of the video footage provided by police.
The accident also left several people including police personnel injured in the early hours of July 2 when an allegedly inebriated Siddharth lost control of the vehicle.
The incident had sparked outrage in the state with calls for stringent punishment to the accused.
“The video footage corroborates what the police had been saying from the beginning, that Siddharth Maharia was driving the BMW on the night of the accident in an inebriated state…These footages puncture the claim of Maharia and his advocates that it was not Siddharth but Ramesh (his driver) who was driving the car,” said Prafulla Kumar, additional commissioner of police (crime).
When police confronted Siddharth with the video footage, he confessed that he went to those places, the police official added.
The driver had earlier approached police saying he was driving the vehicle when it met with the accident but later retracted saying he made the “confession” under pressure from the MLA.
Video footage provided by police show Siddharth and his friends roaming around town for about seven hours before the accident, starting from the Hotel Las Vegas at Sahkar Marg at 6:09pm.
The footage shows Siddharth getting down from the driver’s seat before entering the hotel.
They went up to the House of People bar on the third floor and drank beer, police said. They left the hotel at 6:54 pm with Siddharth driving the car.
They then drove to Malviya Nagar to pick up another friend and then entered Café Tweet at 22 Godam where they ordered hookah and pizza, police said.
They left the café at around 8.50 pm and went to the MLA quarters to drop off one of their friends.
Siddharth and friends then reached hotel Golden Oak near Ahimsa Circle at 9.15pm and the CCTV footage shows Siddharth driving the car, police said.
Later they went to Black out Hotel and Bar where another friend was already present.
They ordered three bottles of wine, two bottles of beer and food, police said. They later exited the hotel at around 12:30 am. Here too, Siddharth is seen driving the car.
Officials said footage available with the police control room show the vehicle moving through Kishanpole Market, Ajmeri Gate, MI Road and Panch Batti before it reached the road in front of the St Xavier’s school where accident took place.
A sessions court on Friday extended the police remand of Siddharth by two days.
