Faced with the VHP determined to use the 84-kosi yatra, the Union home ministry has advised the Uttar Pradesh government to be vigilant and raise its share of deployment of state police forces for guarding the temple complex at Ayodhya.

A government source told HT that UP had reduced its share of policemen to guard the Ramjanambhoomi complex over a period of time and the state had been again reminded to deploy the full complement of state police forces.

In the outer cordon, the state police deployment is nearly one-third less than the prescribed number, a source said.

"The home ministry has been taking up this issue with the state government over the last six months," he said, pointing that the Centre had been engaging with the district authorities and Lucknow, verbally and in writing.

Home ministry sources said the centre and the state government shared concerns about the ability of the yatra sponsors to vitiate the delicate communal situation in the state and were determined to ensure peace.

"The UP government has been specifically asked to seek more central forces if required," a Congress leader said.
