The Centre has sought a report from Uttar Pradesh government on the issue of alleged abduction and gang rape of a 20-year-old woman after forcible religious conversion in Meerut district.
The Centre’s decision on Tuesday came even as Mulayam Singh Yadav, chief of the ruling Samajwadi Party in UP, said stern action would be taken against those responsible for the alleged crime that has put Meerut on the edge.
Meerut is in western UP which has been witnessing intermittent communal flare-ups for over a year now, the worst being the Muzaffarnagar riots in August-September 2013.
Amid outrage in Meerut over the alleged crime, the police have arrested five persons so far.
The situation in the district, less than 70 km from national capital Delhi, is tense but under control, according to district magistrate Pankaj Yadav.
“One company of Rapid Action Force (RAF) was deputed apart from police teams in the district to avert any untoward incident,” Yadav had said on Tuesday.
The woman’s family wants a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe initiated. Her brother told PTI a CBI probe was needed for fair investigation and to bring culprits to justice.
A source in the police said the woman’s family suspected a reproductive organ might have been taken out because a cut mark was evident on her stomach.
Meerut district upper civil judge Neetu Yadav has recorded the woman’s statement.
