After oscillating between affection, affectation, anticipation and abhorrence for over three months now under the media glare, the country’s most  controversial love story came to an abrupt and unhappy end on Friday night when Chander Mohan legally “divorced” his second wife Anuradha Bali.

The former deputy chief minister, who had taken to Islam to marry ex-law officer Bali, called her up to put to an end to the liaison that saw his interim ouster from the power circles and family.

“Talaq, talaq, talaq” and the love saga was over, legally. The terse assertion came soon after the S.A.S. Nagar police refused to register Bali’s case of rape, cheating, intimidation and hurting religious sentiments against Chander Mohan a.k.a Chand Mohammad.

Bali told reporters on Saturday that Mohan called her up from London on Friday night and uttered “talaq” three times. The utterance was followed by a short message of “talaq” over the mobile phone.

“The police are afraid of Chand’s family and have not conducted fair investigation in the case,” she said and added she would move court to seek legal action against Chand.

Both had disappeared in November last year and re-appeared in December after 40 days as a couple after embracing Islam. They had changed their names from Chander Mohan and Anuradha Bali to Chand Mohammed and Fiza.

The marriage lasted 40 days, with Chander Mohan suddenly walking out of Fiza’s house on January 28.
