Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy on Thursday used Google+ Hangout — a video chat service from the Google stable — to connect with five million plus school and college students and encourage them to become job creators instead of job seekers on the occasion of Students’ Entrepreneurship Day.

“Money won’t be a problem in encouraging skills. Many of our youngsters are going out in search of avenues. We want entrepreneurs emerging from within Kerala. So that we can attract many who left the state seeking greener pastures,” said the CM while mentioning that one per cent of the total state budget — roughly Rs. 500 crore — would be earmarked for young entrepreneurs.

In his 10-minute long speech, Chandy announced several policies to groom entrepreneurial skills in schools and colleges. He also said that entrepreneurship development clubs would be started to attract fresh ideas.

“On this day last year we announced the Student Entrepreneurship Policy (SEP) and it has had a huge response from the young, mostly students who turned to the IT sector. This time we are now extending the same to other sectors like agriculture, tourism, and entertainment,” he said.

The government’s ‘entrepreneurial drive’ has been encouraged by the runaway success of the Startup village in Kochi. Started in 2012, the village has more than 300 firms and it is planning to raise the number to 1,000 by 2020.
