The Goa police will most likely be filing its chargesheet against Tehelka co-founder Tarun Tejpal by the first week of February, said officials.
Tejpal, accused of sexually assaulting a junior colleague during a festival in Goa in November last year, has been in custody for more than a month now.
Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar had earlier said, shortly after Tejpal was arrested, that the chargesheet would be filed by December end. However, the probe is still in progress.
The Goa police is also waiting for Hollywood star Robert De Niro, who was at the festival as a speaker, to respond to them. The police had written to him last week asking for his version of events, as the Tehelka journalist was responsible for escorting him during the festival.
In the meantime, the Panaji sessions court will pronounce its order on Tejpal’s bail plea on Wednesday. After arguments finished on Friday, the court had reserved the order for Wednesday.
Tejpal, in his bail application, had earlier argued that his role in the probe is over, whatever had to be recovered from him has been recovered by the police and that there is no question of his interfering with the investigation.
