Chattisgarh Congress chief Nand Kumar Patel and his son Dinesh Patel were cremated on Monday at their native village, Nandeli in Raigarh district of Chattisgarh, amid shouting of anti-BJP slogans by thousands of emotionally-charged Congress supporters.

Nand Kumar and his son Dinesh Patel were among 27 people killed in an ambush by Maoist guerillas in Bastar region’s forested Jairam valley on Saturday evening.

Patel’s youngest son Umesh performed the last rites amidst chanting of holy mantras. Governor Shekhar Dutt, chief minister Raman Singh, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi among other senior party leaders, including a couple of MPs and the state MLAs, were present on the occasion.

Senior BJP leaders also paid homage to the slain father-son duo, while Congress workers and supporters shouted slogans against the BJP government the moment the chief minister and his cabinet colleagues arrived at the venue.

On Sunday, the Patel family had alleged the massacre was a conspiracy and demanded a CBI probe into it.
Senior Congress tribal leader and founder of now disbanded Salwa Judum, Mahendra Karma, who was brutally murdered after being taken alive by the Maoists during the ambush, will be cremated later in the day in Dantewada.
