Mining operations have been halted in the region after the incident. “Around 2 in the morning, the Maoists targeted the firm situated in the hilly terrain at Akashnagar in Bacheli and set on fire some 50-60 metres long conveyor belt which is used to transport iron ore. The blaze was brought under control by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel,” said Dantewada superintendent of police Narendra Khare.

NMDC has two mines -- Bacheli and Kirandul -- in Maoist-affected Dantewada district, which are guarded by the CISF.

The rebels have destroyed conveyor belts of the NMDC on earlier occasions as well, leading to crippling of production and losses worth lakhs of rupees.
