Vinay Sharma, one of the accused in the December 16 Delhi gangrape case, could not hide his joy on Thursday when the judge told him that he would get a tutor as well as reading materials to help him prepare for the Indian Air Force clerical recruitment test.

“I want this trial to get over as soon as possible,” Sharma told HT. He had submitted these requests before the court on Tuesday. The jail authorities said a welfare officer would coach Sharma. The special prosecutor said the prosecution had no problems with the court’s direction.

Throughout the two-hour trial, Sharma listened carefully to his counsel’s cross-examination of the witnesses. He also spoke to the policemen constantly and repeated his lawyer’s arguments in Hindi.

He requested the judge to provide him clean clothes.

Unlike him, the other three accused — Mukesh, Pawan and Akshay — remained quiet throughout.
