The police in the Millennium City are trying hard, literally, to shed their stereotyped image. The residents would now witness hunky cops more often than those with fat bellies.
Nearly 50 officers of the Gurgaon police have been following a strict diet and exercise schedule for the last three months to become physically fit and look smarter.
Those following the fitness routine include officers of DCP, ACP, SHO and other ranks.
According to fitness experts, many policemen, despite doing regular exercises, become out of shape physically because of their erratic working hours and improper diet.
"I used to exercise regularly. But our work hours are so unpredictable that we tend to skip our meals. This had impacted our physique," said ACP Ravinder Tomar.
The dietitian behind the fitness regime is 25-year-old Medha Nagpal, a resident of Suncity on Golf Course Road, Gurgaon. Nagpal had found three major problems with the policemen -- most of them are overweight, have erratic working hours and lack a balanced diet.
"They were used to frequent intake of tea and coffee and drank very less water. I didn't make any major changes in their diet pattern but just organised it a little more for them," said Nagpal, who has done masters in therapeutic nutrition.
For example, ACP Ravinder Tomar has been told to jog for at least 60 minutes every morning. "They were all sincere in abiding the plan which I gave them. It was a combination of a balanced diet and exercise," she explained.
The deputy commissioner of police (east), Maheshwar Dayal, said he has lost 9kg in the past three months.
"Cops have irregular working hours and they don't even eat their meals on time. This makes them prone to gaining weight. Their metabolism rate also drops considerably," he said.
