In another shocking case of superstition and stigma, a ‘morol’ (head of village and kangaroo court) of tribals allegedly labelled Sumitra Hansda, a class 2 student, and her mother as a witch. Moreover, the two had to flee their home after threats of beheading if they didn’t submit a fine of Rs 1 lakh.

The incident came to light after the victim lodged a complaint with Boro police station against seven people. “After getting the complaint, we have started a probe”, a police official said.

Earlier, such a kangaroo court had ordered the rape of a girl and branded several women as witches.

Prior to this, two tribal women were allegedly beaten up by 80 villagers after being branded witches in Barelahar and one of them was in a critical condition. There have been reports of many more such incidents in the area where women were tortured and made to cough up hefty fines by the village heads.
