JAMMU: A Class 6 student was killed and 12 others injured, eight of them seriously, when a rashly driven school bus fell into a nullah (rivulet) near Bishnah in Jammu district on Wednesday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Khushboo, daughter of Ashok Kumar of Chakda village in Bishnah tehsil.

Aged between 5-18 years, the students belonged to an all girls school— RKS School in Bishnah.

“Mishap occurred around 6.45 am near Kikar Morh at Chak Bana village. The bus was being driven rashly when it skidded off the road and fell into the rivulet,” said a police officer.

The seriously injured students have been hospitalised at Government Medical College and Hospital here in Jammu.

Jammu deputy commissioner Simrandeep Singh has said a magisterial probe has been ordered. Sub divisional magistrate south Sonu Pargal will be conducting the probe and submit a report within 15 days.

Singh said, “There are many lapses in the case. Firstly, the bus is not registered with the authorities concerned for ferrying school children. Secondly, the bus is probably 25 years old; and thirdly, it seems like it was carrying more children than its seating capacity.” We are looking into the matter, he added.

The authorities of the RKS School have been directed by the deputy commissioner to pay a compensation of `2 lakh to the family of Khushboo, the student who died in the accident and `50,000 each to the eight seriously injured students.

“In such cases, the transport department has a provision to give compensation from the passenger welfare fund. We will ensure that the family gets it,” he added.

The bus driver, whose identity has not been ascertained, was reported to be absconding. Police said he was talking on the mobile phone while driving the bus.

Four critically injured students have been identified as Niharika (5) of Smailpur Bishnah, Meena Sharma (14) of Fatwal Bishnah, Nitika (12) and Surekha (18) of Bishnah. Majority of the students have reportedly suffered injuries on their heads and legs.
