Whistleblower website Cobrapost has claimed after a “sting operation” that the unique identity system Aadhaar is prone to fudging and immigrants with doubtful citizenship can potentially enrol themselves in the programme.

The sting claimed enrolment officers had said there was no problem of getting an Aadhaar card made without a proper address proof. Cobrapost correspondent posed as a benefactor for refugees from Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan and approached Aadhaar offices, the website said.

He told the officers that these immigrants have no identity or address proof but need help in getting an Aadhaar card. Aadhaar officers wanted a photograph and address for making an affidavit to be countersigned by the local MLA or a gazetted. The fees varied from Rs. 2,500 to Rs. 5,000.

A recent RTI query revealed that UIDAI had not checked the antecedents of the companies that have been enlisted to collect biometric data.
