A Congress MP on Tuesday accused VHP leaders of trying to communalise the political discourse by making inflammatory remarks and sought action from the government against them.

Husain Dalwai, a Rajya Sabha MP from Maharashtra, quoted a recent interview published in Hindustan Times to allege that VHP leaders were trying to fan communal sentiment.

“There people are trying to create a divide. Never has the Muslim community disrespected the Hindu community members,” Dalwai said in the upper house amidst strong opposition from BJP MPs like Chandan Mitra, VP Singh and others.

In an interview to HT last week, VHP leader Ashok Singhal had said the result of Lok Sabha election reflected that an election could be won “without Muslim support” and it was time the minority community learnt to respect Hindu sentiments.

Dalwai also claimed that VHP leaders were talking about Kashi and Mathura and threatened repeat of Muzaffarnagar riots.

New Kailash route against religion: Uttarakhand CM

A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese president Xi Jinping agreed on opening an alternative route to Kailash Mansarovar, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat said it goes against religious sentiments. It is not in keeping with the centuries-old scriptures which recognise only the traditional route for the pilgrimage passing through Uttarakhand, he said.
