The ruling Congress in Karnataka won two Lok Sabha seats in the state — both JD(S) strongholds — for which bypolls were held on August 21. The results, announced on Saturday, came as a huge boost to the 100-day-old state government.
Though the winners will have less than a year's tenure in the Lok Sabha as general elections are due next year, the Congress and the JD(S) had turned the bypolls into a battle for prestige.
On Saturday, the beaming chief minister, Siddaramaiah said, "The people's mandate was against the JDS-BJP combination. The Congress government's pro-people programmes won the hearts of the people."
Both seats were won by political greenhorns — Kannada actor Ramya won against JD(S)' CS Puttaraju in Mandya and senior Congress MLA DK Shiva Kumar's brother DK Suresh Kumar defeated Anitha Kumaraswamy in Bangalore Rural.
Anitha is the daughter-in-law of JD(S) president and former prime minister HD Deve Gowda. She is married to HD Kumaraswamy, the JD(S) state chief and former chief minister.
