Congress wrests two panchayat seats in Gujarat

The ruling BJP in Gujarat has lost two crucial district panchayats -- Kheda and Banaskantha -- to the opposition Congress.

Of the 15 block panchayats, the BJP won nine and the Congress six.

The panchayat elections were held on February 17. The Congress had fared well in both Kheda and Banaskantha districts in the recently-held assembly polls.

This time, in Kheda, the Congress won 22 seats, while the BJP won 18 and an Independent candidate won one seat.

In Banaskantha, the Congress retained power by winning 28 seats while the saffron party won just 26.

Of the total 348 seats of district panchayats, for which results were declared on Tuesday, the BJP won 187 seats and the Congress won 154. Seven seats went to Independents.

Police to conduct polygraphic test on DIG Paraskar
