The battle between the GenNext and the old guard in the Congress escalated on Thursday as young leaders attacked the seniors for “hurting” the party interests by going public with their “negative” comments.

The secretaries also shot off a strongly worded letter — 14 out of the total 44 are signatories to it — to the senior leaders asking them to refrain from expressing their views in public even as Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi downplayed the rift in the party.

“There are multiple voices in the party and all of them bring solution to problems,” he said in Amethi. “There are always these types of tension and we will deal with them.”

Four secretaries — Harish Choudhary, Naseeb Singh, Prakash Joshi and Shakeel Ahmed Khan — met Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi with the letter and requested him to circulate it among all senior party leaders.

HT was the first to report on August 22 that young leaders, including AICC secretaries and former MPs, have formed a group and held several meetings in the past few weeks to chalk out their future plan of action. These leaders had decided to take on seniors for their “deafening silence” on attacks on Rahul from within the organisation or outside of it, particularly after the drubbing in the Lok Sabha polls.

The latest provocation appears to be remarks by Dwivedi and Digvijaya Singh. While Dwivedi suggested that party leaders above 65 years should not hold important organisational posts Singh had stated that Rahul’s silence on critical issues had contributed to the party’s loss in the “war of perception”.
