A lovelorn constable shot dead a college girl and later attempted to kill himself at Satpuda College in Saunsar town in the district Chhindwara on Monday, the police said.

The incident took place when a B.Sc final year student, Sharda (20) reached the college to appear for a practical exam when Special Armed Force (SAF) constable Jagdish Indorkar (24) allegedly shot her with a country made pistol.

The bullet hit Sharda in her neck after which he fired at his temple in a bid to commit suicide, the police said.

Both were rushed in a critical condition to Nagpur, but Sharda succumbed to her injuries en route, while Jagdish is battling for his life in the hospital.

Jagdish was posted as a personal security guard of Balaghat MLA K D Deshmukh and had arrived in his village Bichhua on leave, the police said.

He fell in love with Sharda and got very annoyed when he learnt that she would get married to somebody else on June 5, the police said.
