A day after Rs. 65 lakh went missing from two ATMs (automated teller machines) of Punjab National Bank at Modi Nagar, police investigations revealed that 14 ATMs of different banks used the same security password to load cash into the machines.

The police had, on Sunday, detained four employees of a cash collection and dispensing agency for questioning after the disappearance of the money.

On Monday, however, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Raghubir Lal said the password lapse could prove to be a major security concern.

“The four employees who were detained on Sunday told us that 14 other ATMs of different banks in Ghaziabad were secured with one password. This is a very critical issue and we have immediately informed the cash dispensing agency about the lapse,” Lal said.

Investigators said that the password is a security code used to unlock the ATMs and load cash into the system.

“We are investigating who is behind such a major lapse in ATM security. We have immediately instructed the company to change the passwords and they have initiated their procedures,” Lal said.

The SSP said the cash collection and dispensing agency, Writers Safeguard, lodged a police complaint into the missing money incident, and an FIR, under Section 406 of the Indian Penal Code (criminal breach of trush) was lodged at Modi Nagar police station.

The police are now on the lookout of Ankit Kumar, a former employee of the agency, who is believed to have recently quit his job.

Kumar has now become a suspect in the case.

“We still have no specific information about Kumar. The CCTV footage has failed to reveal the culprits,” Lal said.
