A CPI(M) Zilla Parishad (a district-level body) member was on Monday shot dead in Burdwan district of West Bengal, which is witnessing political clashes since last week.

Falguni Mukherjee, a the parishad members, was on his way to the office from his Mangalkot residence on a motorbike when some men accosted him near Kheromajhigram, SP R Rajsekharan said.

Rajsekharan said the assailants fired several times at Mukherjee, killing him on the spot and escaped.

As Mukherjee's body lay at the spot, a mob blocked the road and refused to take away the body till the accused were put behind the bars.

CPI(M) district secretary Amol Halder alleged that Mukherjee, a popular Left leader, was killed by Trinamool Congress (TC) activists to unleash terror in the district.

TC leader Azizul Haq Mondal claimed Mukherjee, who looked after the power supply department of the parishad, was a victim of CPI(M)’s internal feud as he had threatened to unmask corrupt deals.

Three CPI(M) supporters were killed in a clash with tribals allegedly backed by Maoists in West Midnapore on Sunday.
